Iglesias, Sardinia

Iglesias (; (サルデーニャ語:Igrèsias))〔AA. VV., ''Dizionario di toponomastica. Storia e significato dei nomi geografici italiani'', Milano, GARZANTI, 1996, p. 327〕 is a ''comune'' of province of Carbonia-Iglesias, region of Sardinia, Italy. It is the co-capital of the province of Carbonia-Iglesias (along with Carbonia) as well as its second-largest community.
In the period of Spanish control, the city was one of the most important royal cities of Sardinia. It is also successor of the historical diocese of Sulcis, now episcopal seat.
Situated at an elevation of in the hills in the southwest of Sardinia, it was a centre of a mining district where lead, zinc, and silver were extracted. It was also a centre for the distillation of sulfuric acid.
==Main historical sights==
Iglesias' cathedral dates from 1288, and the castle from 1325; the church of San Francesco is a 15th-century example of Gothic architecture.
Giardino Montano Linasia is a nature preserve and botanical garden.
